Work is now under way around the house to install paving and ramps around the house to make the exterior wheelchair friendly.

Feeding Tube (PEG)

I recently had a PEG fitted at the John Radcliffe Hospital. It involved admission on a Monday evening, fitting on Tuesday, going home on Wednesday. Sandie drove me to the hospital, which was unusually quiet for us, it being an evening. I was admitted to the Neuroscience Ward in the West Wing into a 4 bed bay. I sat in my chair by the bed for some hours. Prof Martin Turner visited and we had a nice chat. Eventually two nurses came to hoist me into bed, but made a complete mess of it, nearly dumping me on the floor. Eventually they summoned two experienced nurses, who did the job in 10 minutes. On Tuesday morning me and my bed were trundled through long corridors and lifts to Endoscopy. I was accompanied by a trainee nurse, who wanted to witness the operation. After another wait I was wheeled into the operating room. I was lightly sedated, my breathing being compromised, which still made the 15 minute process easy to undergo. Family Gathering

The pending arrival of my brother Fred and his Canadian wife Sarah from Grand Cayman, where they live, triggered plans for a family weekend to welcome them. We decided it would need to be at my and Sandie's houses, so as to accommodate my needs. Sandie nobly rose to the challenge of doing the catering for about a dozen people. We sourced much of the food from local businesses, such as Green's in Pangbourne and West Berks brewery. Things started with the arrival of my sister Maggie on Thursday 8th August to help with preparations. The plan was breakfasts for all in my house under her supervision, with lunches and dinners at Sandie's. On the Saturday afternoon Jim and Sarah's plane landed at Gatwick from Spain, where they'd spent a week. Most of my five siblings and some of their partners arrived on Saturday and enjoyed dinner at Sandie's. Final arrivals on Sunday completed the assembly. Eye Gaze Tablet

The local MNDA organisation has loaned me an elderly eye gaze tablet, a Tobii C15, which is obsolete, but still works. It was discovered under someone's bed. I have been agitating for some time about the need to get one's hands on such a device early, so as to learn about it and set it up properly.  I am assured I'll get an up-to-date one eventually and admonished not to buy one myself. Using eye gaze is a bit unnerving. If you keep your eyes on the screen, which is a normal thing to do, your gaze unexpectedly sets things off, which you then have to close down. So it'll need practice to become proficient. It has built-in infrared control, so I plan to see if I can make it control lights, TV, audio and so on, all using eye gaze.
