Ramps Mark 2

My ground works team have just completed a major enhancement to the the Mark 1 ramp that led to the car.  The new Mark 2 system consists of an area of decking, with three ramps leading off it:
  • One to the drive, car and garage,
  • One to the path round the side of the house, which leads to post box, dustbins and gate onto the road,
  • One to the outhouse, with its freezer and storage.
The decking has enough space for a table and chairs.  

 The advantages of this scheme are:
  • It allows me to use the back door to exit the house in a wheelchair, mount the ramp to the car, load the chair into the Topper and drive away,
  • The gradient of the ramp to the car is much reduced, as it springs from the decking rather than from the ground, as before.
  • I can get to the outhouse and front gate in a wheelchair.

Eye Gaze Tablet

The local MNDA organisation has loaned me an elderly eye gaze tablet, a Tobii C15, which is obsolete, but still works. It was discovered under someone's bed. I have been agitating for some time about the need to get one's hands on such a device early, so as to learn about it and set it up properly.  I am assured I'll get an up-to-date one eventually and admonished not to buy one myself. Using eye gaze is a bit unnerving. If you keep your eyes on the screen, which is a normal thing to do, your gaze unexpectedly sets things off, which you then have to close down. So it'll need practice to become proficient. It has built-in infrared control, so I plan to see if I can make it control lights, TV, audio and so on, all using eye gaze.

Ceiling Hoist

I now have a ceiling hoist installed in the bedroom. It's a Handimove hoist that goes anywhere in the bedroom. You can watch videos of it in operation https://www.handimove.com/products/ceiling-motor/ It uses a gadget called a Body Support that holds you firmly, avoiding the need for a sling. So it's quicker and easier to get into or out of. It has two large hooks that go under your thighs and two pads that grasp you round your chest. Here's a photo of it, showing the hoist motor above it. Over a couple of weeks, we've worked out workflows for the main operations: Getting out of bed and dressed Getting undressed and into bed Doing a loo run  It's quicker and easier than doing transfers with a board. It makes life easier for Sandie, particularly with awkward operations like getting trousers on and off. It works well in conjunction with the hospital bed. It's now in use several times each day.

Abbey Dore

Back home after a fine time at the annual Abbey Dore singing week. See: https://www.englishchoralexperience.co.uk/ Sandie and I stayed at a converted bungalow in nearby Grosmont, which had the necessary equipment. We have attended the annual singing week for about 10 years. Last year I was walking with the support of a rollator. This year by wheelchair. The main issue was getting into the abbey in a wheelchair, as it involved descents by ramps, the first of which was particularly long and steep.I was far from sure that it was feasible, but the conductor, Paul Spicer, took me down backwards with skill. By the end of the week I had 4 able pilots plus willing assistants. Six passages of the ramps were needed each day, 3 up and 3 down. My singing voice has been failing me, mainly in the upper registers, so I was an observer rather than a singer. I attended all the rehearsals and enjoyed them nonetheless.
